FEGAN, Ethel Sophia (1877-1975)

At Cheltenham she introduced the once famous 'library class' and collaborated with Monica Cant, whom she had trained, to produce and publish A library classification for schools: the Cheltenham classification (1937). She had also published School libraries: practical hints on management (1928). During World War II she reported on library needs in British West Africa for the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the British Council and in 1944 established the pioneer library school at Achimota College.
